For more than 35 years, the Boston Institute for Psychotherapy has provided therapy with an emphasis on creating a safe environment that supports individual growth. The Institute is a licensed clinic which also offers advanced training and continuing education to professionals. Within the Treatment Center, the Center for Young Children and Families services families at risk.

The Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis has provided psychoanalytic training and low-cost mental health services to the Boston area for over 30 years. It has also provided a wide range of consulting and training services to community organizations. BGSP has had a special interest in working in the schools and training educators on ways of working with students presenting challenges.

Many of today's students have a variety of unmet social and emotional needs which impede their ability to develop academically and have positive social relations. The School-Based Program provides services developed to meet these needs and promote healthy student social and academic functioning. We provide services to over 100 students in seven Boston Public Schools and are expanding to include more.

Program Philosophy
Our work is based on creating a safe environment for both child and family to explore the difficulties they are experiencing and behaviors that bring success. By working closely with school personnel we are able to lessen the stress of daily life for the child, family and school staff. All our work is guided by the following principles:

  • Consider the child and his/her difficulties in the context of the family, school and community environment.
  • Work closely with other care providers, such as family and school personnel.
  • Attend to the particular needs of individual schools and the students they serve.
Counseling Services
We work with children in one or a combination of the following modalities:
  • Individual Counseling
  • Family Therapy
  • Group Therapy
  • Specialized Groups, such as Anger Management, Whole Classroom, Substance Abuse and Social Skills
  • Parent Groups
  • Consultation and Assessments
Other Services
  • Consultation to teachers in classroom behavior management.
  • Training in diversity and cultural awareness.
  • Innovative treatment models for specific problems such as learning disabilities, ADHD, obesity and sexual abuse.

The School-Based Program builds upon the community-based experiences of both organizations, such as:
  • The Infant Mental Health Program
